The Farmers of Yesterday And Today

Farming has been a part of mankind’s history from the very beginning. It may have started with a simple hunter and his mate who found plants that were edible and learned how to cause them to propagate. From that moment farming was born. For thousands and thousands of years it has been a way to supplement the diets and coffers of families. The family would grow extra produce and would sell the excess in the local market for others to buy. The farmers at that time had a steep, uphill battle to produce enough food.

The farmers that work today on their crops have it much easier than their ancestors. New developments in the realm of food and agriculture have led to better harvesting techniques and better, more health conscious pesticides. Now farmers can produce enough to guarantee that their families have enough year round while still providing everyone else with the opportunity to have fresh produce and meat.

Rural development allowed farmers more access to larger tracts of land. They could farm on a much larger scale in order to produce high enough quantities of produce to help feed the rest of the world. Farmers now have more excess crops that are sold to huge processing plants. The processing plants then prepare the food for distribution to markets around the world. What may have started out as a small garden patch on the farm blossomed into a multi-billion dollar industry. There are still risks for farmers such as pests or crop damage but at least farmers no longer have to worry about starving if they have a bad harvest. There is an inherent food security now for everyone involved. If a country has been hit by natural disasters, then they can receive aid from other countries during their hardship.

If there were one group to thank for the radical changes for the farmers it would be the USDA. The United States Department of Agriculture regularly checks to make sure that the food being grown on farms is safe for the public. Their research and development division has created great innovations for farmers to have more resources and techniques for their farms. Food and agriculture is a major factor in every person’s life so there are times when the USDA will help farmers out if there has been a natural disaster. This is definitely a change from cavemen digging in the dirt with no guarantee of success.

The Farmers of Yesterday And Today

If you were to think back to how long man has been farming, then you would realize that it has been thousands and thousands of years. Farming was initially a way to ensure that the family would have enough to eat during the winter months when game would be scarce. With new developments in agricultural tools the farmers branched out and produced more for their families and still had enough to sell in the local market. Today’s factory farming operations produce massive quantities that go directly to feeding the masses.

Times have changed for the farmers who grow the food that their nation consumes. Most farmers operate on a large scale. They no longer have to worry about making it through the winter because the farming industry has changed so dramatically. In the past, every family had to either have wealth or they had to grow their own garden to supply them through the winter.

There is an inherent food security now for everyone involved. If a country has been hit by natural disasters, then they can receive aid from other countries during their hardship.

So who do the farmers really owe a big thanks to? That would be the USDA. The United States Department of Agriculture is continuously developing new growing techniques and ways to guarantee bigger yields each year. Even the general public should be very thankful because it is the USDA that helps to make sure that the food we eat meets the high safety standards they have set.

The farmers today have a huge advantage over their prehistoric ancestors. The farming industry is a major force in the world. Food and agriculture research has led to hardier crops that are more resistant to diseases and require fewer pesticides. This is a huge step up from just barely having enough food to feed your family and trying to worry about having enough to sell at the market. Now everyone can have year round access to fresh fruits and vegetables without worrying about paying outrageous prices that previously only the wealthy could afford.

The Farmers of Yesterday And Today

Farming has been around for a long time. When the first prehistoric man learned to cultivate some plants to supplement his family’s food source, farming became a way of life. Yet for many centuries the farmers were “on their own.” If they had a good harvest, then there would be enough crops to sell for other basic essentials. The farmer would take his or her produce to the local town and sell it from a booth or cart. If the harvest was bad, then there was often not enough to last the farmer through the long winter months.

The Farmers of Yesterday And Today

If you were to try to pinpoint the first exact moment when mankind began to cultivate plants that were edible, you would be going back in time thousands and thousands of years. As far back as prehistoric man, there have been records left regarding man battling the elements to provide enough food for his family. The farmers then and for quite a long time after continuously struggled to provide enough for their family and have enough left over to sell at market. There was no grocery store down the road and it was not an easy life for anyone.

In the United States the USDA is the major force for the farmers. It is the governing body that ensures that quality crops are being grown and that everything is regulated. The USDA is also responsible for helping farmers when they have a crop failure by ensuring government aid. Farming has come quite a long way from our prehistoric ancestors. The farmers today have some sense of security. Things can still go bad but not on the scale where starvation is imminent. Food and agriculture will always be a major factor in the lives of everyone but at least now it is a bit easier for farmers.
