The Farming Life

It is unfortunate that many people do not give the farming industry the proper respect that it deserves. If it were not for food and agriculture the world would cease to exist. Food would be determined by just what the local farmers could grow and even that would be restricted by their own family needs. There would be a global shortage of food. People everywhere would have to undertake farming themselves in order to have life sustaining food. Life on the farm requires hard work and dedication.

If you think that farming is just about some cows in a pasture or a few rows of crops, then you would be greatly mistaken. Many farms are huge operations that require twenty-four seven tending. There are no breaks or vacations for many farmers. But thanks to agricultural research, more plants and animals are being developed that can produce larger yields.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a major hand in how farmers live and work. There are special grants set aside by the government that ensure that farmers will not go under if something were to happen to their crops. In the past, a failed crop could mean foreclosure on the farm and the farmer would have to give up his land. These days, if something disastrous occurs, then the government steps in and helps the farmer out during the hard times. Does this make things easier? Yes, to an extent but there is still a lot of hard work to do on a farm that no amount of money can cover.

Farming is not a life for everyone. It requires patience, endurance and a lot of hard work. It is why people should rejoice that there are families that spend their lives ensuring that the rest of the world has the food and supplies that they need in order to survive. Without those farmers, the grocery store shelves would be bare and people all over the world would be in dire straits.

QA Farming

There is not a single person on this planet that is disassociated with farming. It is how people live and eat. Even vegans or vegetarians have to rely on this food source. There is so much that goes on in the farming community. From the actually production of food to the final stage where the food is consumed, growing plants and animals on a farm is the cornerstone to civilization. It has been around since mankind first began to till the land or domesticate animals. In this article we will cover the basics of how the farm works and how you finally end up with the products that you eat. It is a fascinating process from beginning to end and it will make you aware of the obstacles that farmers face each day.

What is farming?

Farming is actually referred to as agriculture. The practice of agriculture has been around for roughly 10,000 years. It encompasses livestock, plants, fuels, pharmaceuticals and even illegal drugs and exotic products. Farms produce most of the products that you would typically find in a home. From the trees grown on farms for building purposes to the herbs that you season your food with, agriculture has a monumental impact on everyone’s daily lives. It is hard to be entirely self-sustaining. At one point or another you have to buy something that is agriculturally produced that you cannot provide for yourself. There are only a few places in the entire world that agriculture does not take place. Science has played a remarkable role in how farms have changed their planting and growing techniques.

What impact does farming have on the economics of the world?

Farming has a tremendous impact on the world’s economy even though it is less than 5% of the gross world product. Nearly one-third of the population, across the entire globe, is employed in some agricultural related job. The huge impact that agriculture has stems from the fact that everyone has to eat. Some countries are not able to grow enough food or raise enough livestock to provide for all of its citizens. So other countries sell or trade their excess food. Industrialization has played a huge part in taking away some of the impact that agriculture has on the world’s economy. But agriculture still remains very strong. If you were to remove all agricultural products from the stock market and even markets in general, you would see a lightening fast decline in how the world functions and operates.

What is organic farming?

Organic farming is a method in which farmers raise crops and livestock using no artificial pesticides or hormones. They utilize crop rotation in order to keep the soil healthy. Going organic is not new. During the 50′s and 60′s there was a movement to start eating more natural food sources and ensuring that people were not consuming harmful pesticides that were being heavily used at the time. This return to the organic movement has helped small farmers immensely. In a typical market they were being ousted by large scale farm operations. But by raising organically grown vegetable, fibers and animals, they can cash in on the organic niche. They do not have to worry about owning large expanses of land and they can charge more for their produce since it is “healthier.”

Where can I go to get the latest information about farming?

The absolute, best source of information on anything to do with agriculture is the USDA. The United States Department of Agriculture has a website that covers everything from the latest research products to any outbreaks of avian flu. You can visit the website as www.usda.gov.

The Farming Life

The world would completely cease to function without people working the land. The farming industry drives the world. Without local farmers, the nation and the world would soon find themselves completely helpless. Farming is a noble tradition that dates back thousands and thousands of years. It is how people survive and it moves the world’s economy. Each day farmers work to produce the crops and produce that fill our stomachs. The excess is traded to other countries so that people there have the chance for survival.

Farming is its own complete world. It is an ecosystem unto itself. It is not just about putting seeds into the ground and hoping that they will grow. There are farm animals to raise, milk and meat to produce and various wool operations. Thanks to agricultural research more progress is being made to help farmers have plants that do not require as many pesticides or animals that will grow larger and can produce more food or other products.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a major hand in how farmers live and work. There are special grants set aside by the government that ensure that farmers will not go under if something were to happen to their crops. These days, if something disastrous occurs, then the government steps in and helps the farmer out during the hard times. Does this make things easier? Yes, to an extent but there is still a lot of hard work to do on a farm that no amount of money can cover.

If you are a farmer, then the world owes you a great deal of thanks. Farming is a difficult life that requires time and dedication. It is not just a summer hobby for most. Growing a garden in the backyard is vastly different than growing food and raising animals across thousands of acres of land. It is thanks to farmers and food and agriculture that the world can exist as it does today. Without the farmers the world would cease to exist.

The Farming Life

It is really easy to forget that your meals come from more than the local grocery store. In our modern society, if you run out of an item you just make a quick drive up the road to get whatever you need. It may be a package of hamburger or it may be some tomatoes. Many people in large cities have never even seen farms or if they have its just been a local farmers market or field. They don’t know the global scale that farming plays on food and agriculture. Farmers do not lead easy lives. Even if they run huge farms with plenty of farm hands, they still have to be involved in all of the day-to-day activities.

The Farming Life

Grocery stores and supermarkets have changed how people view food and agriculture. It does not take much thought to go into a store and pick up a week’s worth of groceries. A few canned vegetables here and some fresh produce there, and they are ready for the week. The connection to the fact that those items had to come from a farm is a distant reality. They do not see the dirt, sweat and worry that is poured into the land in the hopes of a good harvest. Farming, even on a local farmers scale, is a huge importance to everyone’s lives.

Farming is more than just planting seeds in the ground and hoping that they will mature and produce food. There is more to it than that. Agricultural research has helped develop plants that are more hardy and more resistant to diseases and bugs. When people first began to farm the land, they were at the mercy of wind erosion, crop failure and pests. Thanks to research and development these worries are far lessened for today’s farmers.

Yes, to an extent but there is still a lot of hard work to do on a farm that no amount of money can cover.

Farmers have full time jobs. Unlike many other industries, farmers have to be present during certain times of the year. They may get a break during the winter months but come spring, summer and fall, they are out working their fields and ensuring that a good crop will come in. Farming is not for everyone. It is a family effort that requires diligence and knowledge. But the end results are very rewarding. If you are able to look out onto a field of crops that you planted and have grown, then this is a measure of success that not many people experience. Food and agriculture will always be a part of everyone’s lives. As a farmer, you are making a huge difference in the world.

The Bans On Organic Farming

If you have not heard of the organic farming trend, then you must have been living under a rock or in a cave. The movement towards pesticide free produce and hormone free meats has been around since the 1960s, and then during the 80s it died down but has recently undergone a revolution. More people want to know exactly what they are taking into their bodies. They want to know that the food they are eating is healthy. The USDA does a great job enforcing organic regulations to ensure that nothing is marketed without passing their requirements.

If you are wondering how organic farming differs from regular farming, then you should know that it is in two main areas. First, no chemical pesticides are used. Secondly, there is an agreement not to use genetically modified plants or animals. Agricultural research has advanced many different varieties of crops and has helped animals grow larger faster but not enough is known about whether or not there are lasting consequences associated with these advances.

The ban on genetically altered crops is fairly recent. The other ban on pesticides and chemicals goes back to the 1930s. Even then some researchers were discovering links to illness through the overwhelming use of sprays and chemicals. Many small growers stopped using these chemicals. It was not only beneficial to the people eating the crops but it was also beneficial to the environment. Chemical run off is a huge problem with fields. The chemicals are sprayed onto the crops and then the chemicals seep into the soil and are washed away. The polluted water makes its way into streams and lakes where it can affect millions of people. Local farmers who have chosen to grow their crops organically may lose a certain percentage of their crops to pests but they are saving the environment around them in a huge way.

There is a lot of information on the internet and in your local library about organic farming. You may never pick up a hoe in your life but you can still read all you can about this lifestyle. And it really is a lifestyle because you have to reexamine your life and eating habits completely. It is a way of life dedicated to helping people live longer and healthier without the use of chemicals or hormones in their food.

There are two major components to organic farming. These two components are a ban on the use of pesticides and an agreement to not grow genetically manipulated crops. Yes, agricultural research has come out with vegetables and other crops that are more resistant to pests, diseases and climatic changes but organic farmers and their customers believe that the benefits do not outweigh the significant risks associated with using genetically modified foods.
